The past both connects and separates Poland and Germany through their shared turbulent history. This also applies to the metropolises of Bremen and Gdańsk, which maintain a special relationship as Hanseatic twin cities since 1976. In the spirit of cultural exchange, we—the Studio Culture and Identity—jointly decided on the so-called “Tri-City” as the destination for this year’s excursion. For ten days in April 2023, we worked on various projects based on the city of Gdańsk and its surroundings.

In our individual works, we used different approaches to explore the city’s culture of remembrance, the women’s movement in wake of the abortion ban of 2020, the Solidarność movement and the gentrification of Gdańsk. We aim to offer different approaches to these topics, document, and highlight significant aspects of the city and its history. Gdańsk offered many starting points for our own artistic explorations, which we bring together in this publication to build a metaphorical bridge between the twin cities. In addition to the diverse perspectives and approaches to Gdańsk, our publication features a special binding that connects two books via a panoramic bridge creating a haptic connection. The two books can be read either consecutively or simultaneously.
