In the MEMO study, Germany – Multidimensional Memory Monitor of 2020, on the topic of what Germans remember historically, 66.6% of respondents state that the period of National Socialism is part of German identity. Nevertheless, very few people seem to know what role their own ancestors played in National Socialism. Around 68% believe that their ancestors were not among the perpetrators during the National Socialist era. How can that be when 17.3 million Germans were deployed in the Wehrmacht? The lack of exchange between generations and the lack of knowledge about the extent to which one’s own family was involved in the events of the Second World War lead to ignorance and uncertainty. In this project I dealt with the memories of my grandfather’s family during the Second World War.
